We had a really lovely time visiting fitzroy Island yesterday. On our way back to cairns we sat on the upper sun deck with great views this only got bettter when we had an unexpected visitor join us 🐳🐋 The crew promptly turned the engines off and gave us an informative commentary on the humpback whales migration. This was such an unexpected treat not to mention a life long bucket list goal. All staff were friendly and professional. The boat was immaculately clean we will definitely be booking future adventures with this company and recommending to family and friends. Until next time.

The glass-bottom boat trip, which although short, allowed us to get a little further out on the reef and get some explanations. This enabled us to see a turtle and clams in particular.

The staff were great people and very helpful. I liked that the cost was an all included experience. My 7 year old son had the most fantastic time, just loves the reef, however he had concerns about the boat on the way out and the slapping of the water on the boat. He has been investigating boat disasters and thought we had been hit by a torpedo. 😂

Frequently asked questions about Great Barrier Reef tours and cruises

How much does it cost to visit the Great Barrier Reef?

Prices vary by experience. Half-day Green Island cruises start from around AU$105, while full-day outer reef tours with snorkeling and lunch range from AU$199 to AU$300. Premium tours that include diving or scenic flights can exceed AU$400. Family packages and child discounts are widely available.

What are my Great Barrier Reef tour options?

Great Barrier Reef tours are available as either half-day or full-day cruises with at least 1 reef exploration activity included. You can add an additional underwater activity, an Australian lunch or some premium options like small group tours, helicopter tours or marine biologist for additional prices.

How do I get to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns, and how long is the boat ride?

Most tours depart from Cairns' Marlin Marina. Trips to islands like Green Island or Fitzroy take 45–60 mins by catamaran, while outer reef sites like Moore or Norman Reef take 70–90 mins. Some premium tours offer 25-min helicopter transfers. Simply book your tour and meet at the marina for an easy departure.

How far is the Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas?

Port Douglas, about 67 km (42 mi) north of Cairns (1-hour drive or 70–90 min by shuttle), is a great base for reef trips. The outer reef is 30 nautical miles offshore (60–90 min by boat), while Low Isles are just 30 minutes away.

What activities can you do at the Great Barrier Reef?

Popular activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, scenic flights, glass-bottom boat and semi-sub rides. Visitors can join marine biologist tours, explore touch tanks, rainforest walks, turtle centres, underwater observatories, and kids' splash zones. Some tours also offer private sand cay picnics, sunset cruises, or marine education programs.

What Great Barrier Reef tour can I take if I’m on a budget?

Half-day cruises usually begin from AU$95 while some full-day cruises with one reef activity are available for AU$105.

How long does it take to reach the reef?

Most cruises take 1–2 hours from Cairns or Port Douglas to reach the outer reefs.

Can I go on a cruise if I don’t swim?

Yes! Glass-bottom boat tours and underwater observatories are perfect for non-swimmers. Both activities come with select pontoon tours.

Book a Reef Magic pontoon tour

Are pontoon tours better than boat cruises?

Pontoon tours offer more time at the reef with additional amenities like waterslides and semi-submersibles. Boat cruises provide mobility between multiple reef sites.

Do I need prior diving experience?

No! Introductory dives are available for beginners under the guidance of a professional. These dives are available with pontoon experiences.

Book a Sunlover Great Barrier Reef tour

Can I eat before snorkeling or diving?

It is not recommended that you snorkel or scuba dive with an empty stomach as you may feel drained quite easily. However, opt for a light meal of fresh fruits, sandwiches or salads that can be easily digested. Avoid heavy greasy food to avoid feeling nauseous.

What is the age limit for snorkeling and scuba diving?

Typically, snorkeling is available for all ages, while diving may have a minimum age requirement, often 12 or older.

Are there weight restrictions for activities?

Helicopter rides typically have a 130 kg weight limit; heavier passengers may face surcharges or restrictions. Scuba diving has no weight limits but requires sufficient physical fitness.

Are there medical restrictions for diving?

Yes, medical restrictions apply. Guests with conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, or heart conditions may be restricted. A medical check may be needed for guests over a certain weight. We suggest that you get your physician’s approval to remain on the safe side.

How accessible are underwater activities?

Snorkeling can be accessible to all, and some cruises offer tailored support for guests with mobility needs. Scuba diving accessibility may vary and you may need to check with your provider.

How deep will I go while scuba diving?

Introductory dives usually reach around 12 meters (40 feet), while certified divers can explore deeper sites.

Which tours are best if I get seasick?

Pontoon tours are ideal, accessed by stable catamarans moored at steady platforms. Flights let visitors skip the boat. Motion-sickness medication, like Kwells 30 minutes before boarding, is recommended.

Are reef tours accessible for people with disabilities?

Green Island is the most wheelchair-friendly, with paved paths and accessible marine centres. Some pontoons, like Agincourt Reef, have water-powered lifts for guests up to 90 kg. Notify operators in advance to confirm accessibility support.
