Did you know?

Cairns Aquarium has the largest freshwater tank in all of Australia with a 400,000 liter capacity.

Cairns Aquarium has the world's first ever true tidal motion tank.

There are more than 15,000 animals spread across 10 different habitats, including some extremely rare species not found on other parts of the world like freshwater sawfish, Jardine River turtles, ribboned pipefish and more.

What is Cairns Aquarium?

Located in the heart of Cairns City, Cairns Aquarium is the only aquarium in the world dedicated to the unique species found in the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest. Since its opening in 2017, it’s become one of the top indoor attractions in Queensland, showcasing over 16,000 marine and freshwater animals across 10 distinct North Queensland ecosystems.

Wondering if it’s worth visiting? If you’re fascinated by sea turtles, sharks, coral, and reef predators, or you’re travelling with curious kids, this is an essential stop in Cairns. It’s also fully indoors and air-conditioned—perfect for those hot tropical days.

Conservation matters: Sea turtle rescue at Cairns Aquarium

Guests at the Turtle hospital at Cairns Aquarium

One of the best parts of the aquarium is the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. This fully operational sea turtle hospital rescues injured turtles, nurses them back to health, and, when possible, releases them back into the wild.

It’s part of the aquarium’s broader conservation mission, which includes:

  • Daily educational talks and feeding presentations
  • Marine biologist-led experiences
  • Sustainability efforts around animal care and reef protection

You’ll not only learn what makes the reef tick, but also how to help protect it.
